Our Story

McDowell Mountain Builders is a family owned and operated custom homebuilding company based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Owner and founder, David Diltz, opened the doors in 2018 and was later joined by his wife Jennifer and their son Stephen.

David started the company with one employee in the field and David initially did everything from construction and project management to accounting and marketing. As he began building a base of clients, the company quickly grew through referral. While David remains hands on in all aspects of the business and client relations, he has developed a strong team of skilled craftsmen and project managers to work with him on the company’s growing portfolio of custom remodels and new builds.

Growing up in Newport Beach, David enjoyed spending time tinkering in the garage, working on cars and building. He started with birdhouses, moved on to furniture and later began building homes. Before realizing his calling, he earned a degree in business and marketing from Cal State Fullerton. Shortly after graduating, he and Jennifer married and moved to the Midwest to start their careers and a family.

David initially followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, taking a corporate position where he could learn and grow. He started in sales and spent the next ten years moving up the ladder. His success in sales management caught the attention of the President of Behr Paint. After almost two years of courting, David accepted a position as a regional sales manager for the company. Under David’s direction, sales increased 33% and he later launched and managed the company’s Pro division, a multi-million-dollar business, selling paint to major homebuilders throughout the U.S. When the recession hit in 2008, David and his entire team were let go.

At that time, he and Jennifer made the decision to move to Scottsdale with their young kids to live near family and enjoy warmer weather. David knew he no longer wanted to work for others and began contemplating his next career move. While living in the Midwest, he was hands-on in the building of their family homes. He realized he always loved building and decided to get his contractor’s license.  David initially purchased a franchise and began taking on clients for bathroom and kitchen remodels and room additions. In 2018, he parted ways with the franchise and officially launched McDowell Mountain Builders.

David is a trained Six Sigma Black Belt and Kaizen officer from his years in corporate. While he no longer wears a suit and tie to work, he draws on his previous experience and training to bring professional structure and a focus on customer service to an industry that has a reputation for poor service and follow-through.

Today, David oversees a team of 10 employees, plus a mix of highly skilled contractors and trade partners that share a commitment to quality service. David works closely with the company’s clients to understand what they want and ensure he and his team deliver. His favorite part of the job is seeing clients’ smiles when a project is complete.
